What Is a Secured Credit Card?
A secured credit card works just like a regular credit card—with one key difference: it requires a security deposit.
For those with no credit or low credit, a secured credit card helps you build or repair your credit history. As your credit score improves, you can transition to an unsecured card that offers higher credit limits.
How It Works
Make a Deposit
Start by depositing $100 to $1,000, plus an additional 5%, into your membership savings account. This deposit becomes your credit limit and is held as security.
Apply for the Card
Submit your application. Once approved, your card will be issued with a spending limit equal to your deposit.
Upgrade to Unsecured
After 6 to 12 months, you may be eligible for an upgrade to an unsecured credit card:
- If you qualify, you’ll be upgraded to our Visa Platinum with Rewards unsecured card
- Your security deposit will be refunded
- Making on-time payments and keeping your balance below your limit can improve your chances of approval.
Tips for Using Your Credit Card Responsibly
When managed wisely, credit cards can be powerful financial tools that open doors to new opportunities. Building healthy credit habits can help you maximize the benefits of your card while avoiding debt. Here are some expert-recommended strategies for responsible credit card use:
- Pay your balance in full each month to avoid interest charges and keep your credit utilization low.
- Keep your utilization below 30% of your available credit limit to maintain a healthy credit score.
- Set up automatic payments to ensure you never miss a due date.
- Review your statements regularly to quickly catch unauthorized charges or errors.
- Use a card that rewards your most common spending categories (e.g., groceries, dining).
- Avoid cash advances, which can come with higher interest rates and immediate interest accrual.
- Create a budget that includes your credit card payment as part of your monthly finances.
